Default Google Toolbar Flaw Opens Door for Phishers

As if life wasn't complicated enough as it is now we need to take into consideration just how much information Google has on us all and the security of this information.

Here is an example for thought...

"Google is working to fix a bug in the Google Toolbar that could allow criminals to steal data or install malicious software on a system, a security researcher warned Tuesday.

The flaw lies in the mechanism Google Toolbar uses to add new buttons on the browser. Because the toolbar does not perform adequate checks when new buttons are being installed, a hacker could make his button appear as though it was being downloaded from a legitimate site when in fact it came from somewhere else." Jeez louise! It's sad, but I think identity theft is just going to become a way of life.

I've never fallen for an email scam, but I have come close to clicking on one of those websites that looks like it's legit. Those hackers are quite good sometimes. Usually it's just one small thing you notice that looks different, but if you're not looking carefully, you'll miss it. How do they do it? Especially when the website name looks so close to the real website's name??

Interesting piece of news you've got there. Hopefully the bug will be fixed before anyone manages to utilize the loophole for malicious purposes.

At least it's not as bad as the WordPress debacle from a while back, where a massive security hole was added to the code base on a new release!
