Forum theming

Hi,
Do any of you have any experience with theming forums? I've been messing around a lot with SMF lately and although it's a great piece of software, it's an absolute nightmare to theme.

I'm hoping that perhaps another software may have a better theming system than SMF. Perhaps VBulletin?

I've had a look at bbPress which looks like it would be a cinch to theme, but it's feature set is pretty much non-existent, they've definitely gone for the less is more approach. Unfortunately a little less than I would like.
