Thumbs up Illustrator Tips - Transparent Gradient

I know the majority of people use Photoshop for web. However, Adobe Illustrator can supply some similar effects when it comes to transparent gradients.
Suppose you want a highlight fade effect to be placed on an design in Illustrator. It involves more than just the gradient effect itself, but it will be vector and you can resize it without losing resolution!
EX.

Heres how:

- Have your design or object the way you like it .
-Then select the box tool Now move it on top of your object or design.
-Then fill it with a gradient with just B&W.
- Now, Select both objects (should be stacked over one another). Go to your transparency palette (Windows>Transparency) and in the corner, select the corner arrow to open more options, now choose transparency mask. This should give you a fade of color in transparency.
- You can position the fade itself by using the gradient tool . Also, you can play with the transparency itself to fade it more.

Thanks for the tip! Do you know of any Illustrator type programs available for Linux? Afraid I can't afford to splash on real Adobe programs!

Your posts about Illustrator are motivating me to dust off a disk I have lying round with a copy on it. I installed it ages ago with the intention of learning how to use it for poster designing. But my hard drive got fried and I hadn't gotten round to reinstalling it.

Sorry to say I don't, but It would interesting for me to look at various free programs and compare them. I did a quick Google search and found this ---> http://www.linfo.org/software_artists.html Haven't checked them out yet though.

I understand not affording Adobe--especially since now they bought out Macromedia ! Prices way up!!!! Thats a whole other topic!

Glad to hear that! Let me know when you get something done. I'd love to see some work.
