Image tracing - mastering the pen tool

I'm following this tutorial - http://me-myself.deviantart.com/art/...7-CS2-21925847

However it doesn't really cover the pen tool. Are there any good tutorials out there which will help me? I'm find it difficult to match the curves on the source image.
