Default Photos Gallery

Hello.
I want to add a photos gallery to my website. What do people recommend and how should I learn to make one?

Hi and welcome to the forum

The first thing you need to work out is what type of gallery you are looking for. Do you just need a static gallery which doesn't require any regular changes, or do you require something more complicated, including features such as a CMS type backend, ability for users to upload their own photos, photo commenting etc?

The most popular online gallery softwares are CopperMine and Gallery which are feature packed (bloated?) programs which will allow you to do pretty much anything that most people want to do with a photo gallery online. But there are many, many, many others which may be more suitable for you - it all depends on what sort of gallery you are looking for.

Ryan,

Thank you Ryan.

I have found this, http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menu/scroll_gallery, which looks nice, but I am not sure if this is a static gallery or not. Those other features would be nice but I don't think I need them and they may be too complicated for me.

Those galleries on CSSPlay are known as "CSS Galleries". They are very efficient, slick gallery designs, but are normally only available as static galleries. They also suffer from a fundamental problem in that ALL of the images in the gallery need to load for them to function correctly. This is not a huge problem with small galleries, but makes using them for very heavily used galleries quite a big problem.

So in a nutshell ... they're good for small galleries, usually bad for big galleries.

Thank you very much. I think I will use one of the CSSPlay galleries then.
