Default Amazon associates

Have any of you tried Amazon associates before? If so, have you had any success with it?

I've been using it at my venus flytrap website (see signature) and haven't sold a darn thing yet.

Are there any good alternatives to it?

I've looked at clickbank, but found that their inventory was far too small to be of any use to me.

I put it on one of my sites a long time ago, but never had any conversions, but then I didn't get much traffic to that site anyway! I've heard people complaining about it, for example, the cookie isn't set for long enough. I guess a major advantage would be that Amazon are well known and trusted.
I'd be concerned about what happened if you referred someone to Amazon who was already a member there would you still get commission? If not, then this could be a major stumbling block.
