I have been using google adsense for a while (about 3 years) and I never got a single penny in return from google even though I wasgetting impressions and clicks. The reason why is because my site wasn't optimized. Not only that but to get a check from google you must accumulate a balance owed to you of at least $100.00 (which isn't easy to do unless you really want adsense revenue). Google owed me under $50.00 for 2 years and it slowly grew a penny or a quarter here and there. I finally thought "There has to be something wrong with my site if I am only at $50. after a couple of years"! So I decided to read all about "google" and learn as much as I could about page rank, link popularity, adsense channels and banner sizes as well as site optimization (aka SEO) and thats when I realized I had everything jacked up on my website. Here is a few tips that are easy and will help with indexing and crawling that you need to do right now. (These are well known tactics that I was overlooking and finally got my site to make around $300. per month with adsense).
Step 1.)
Createa sitemap that allows googles crawlers to index your pages correctly. This is more important than I can explain and you should do this immediately and submit your new sitemap to google within the site diagnostics section of your adsense account. Heres how to make a simple sitemap from a text file that will be readable by the google bot..Pay attention!
- Lets say your site is
HTML Code:
http://www.example.com
okay? Now if your website URL's ending trail is /index.htm index.html index.php or something like this you need to include it as your full URL only in your sitemap.. Heres how. Make a text file with notepad named sitemap.txt and include one url per line (Only if there are more that one URL in the same exact folder). It should read like this within your site map (the ending trail will depend on what your site is running on like index.php html htm etc.. EXAMPLE"
HTML Code:
http://www.example.com/index.html
- That URL should be on one line and should include the whole url as shown or you will get a redirect error from google.
- Make an entry for every single page that resides in the SAME folder! EXAMPLE: if you have a folder above public_html like
HTML Code:
http://www.example.com/guest_book
there should be a sitemap for this folder too. pm me if you need any more advice on this. Also there are ways to make sitemaps with a sitemap generator but this is the easiest way! Be sure to submit every single page of your site to google within the dashboard area of your google account, then you can submit a sitemap for every page in the diagnostics area.
Step 2.) Be sure you have decent RELATIVE content that is corresponding to your keywords! Don't worry about having very targeted one word keywords if your site isn't ranked up really high. Just use key words and phrases that people would use to find your site in a search and don't over stuff your meta tags with too many keywords. Some great tools for "content text ratio" and page rank standings as well as a lot of other stuff can be found in a Firefox plugin called "Watch SEO" or go to their site
here.
Step 3.) Be sure you don't have old dated content on your website and be sure that you update your content at least once a week like add new paragraphs or articles or something! This will give return visitors a reason to
bookmark you and maybe link to you and then return again. Another way of gaining updated content is via rss feeds (just don't over do it).
Step 4.) Make your home page simple and don't blow out your visitors eyeballs with too many pictures and don't confuse them with 3,000 links that they will never click anyway. Use your adsense spaces wisely and use the banners that look good according to your sites style. I advise having an adsense header links banner I believe it is 728x15 (appx) which looks kind of like links to other pages in your site but isn't really. This will get clicks! Trust me!
Look at mine to see what I'm talking about! Make sure you use them on every page! It gives the visitor the impression that they are part of your site! Hope this advice helps! BY THE WAY! Google's bot doesn't crawl near as often as it use to so when you get your site as optimized as possible, be patient and give it a couple of weeks to get indexed. While your waiting swap links with people like crazy! Good luck! thegotoguy
