RSS Submit is software that automates the submission of your feed url's to various feed directories.

Really useful for getting your site indexed fast.

All my sites which have RSS feeds are powered by WordPress which seem to handle that side of things automatically.

Why would I need to download software to do this, when there are hundreds of sites out there that also do it for free, without wanting me to download and install software from a possibly unsecure source?

Websites are run by software. : )

Wordpress only pings certain feed pinging services, doesn't it?

RSS Submit pings, as well as submitting to feed directories.

Also, this allows you to macromanage thousands of feeds, should you need to use ping services for your networked websites.

It will also, upon completion of the automated set of directories, allow you to submit to many more directories semi-automatically. (RSS Submit opens the submit page in your browser, and auto fills in feed url/information, other forms like description, tags, and captcha require your attention.)

I'm not sure of exactly what WordPress pings, although it definitely does the major search engines (Yahoo, Google, Technorati etc.).

I haven't seen much of a need to ping a bunch of random directories. I've tried it before using a website (can't remember the URL) but I didn't notice any increase in traffic because of it.

Its purpose isn't to get actual reader traffic instantly, it's to get your new pages indexed quickly.

Especially useful if you run a network of many websites with many new posts every day that need to get indexed.

Indexed into what exactly? AFAIK all the major search engines are cover by most CMS's. I don't really get any traffic from anywhere but the major search engines (Yahoo, Google, Ask.com, MSN etc.)
