Default FaceBook to become Open Source?

Has anyone heard about FaceBook becoming Open Source? I read this link today and am quite excited about it ... Facebook To Open Source Facebook Platform

Quote:
Sometime soon, perhaps this week, Facebook will turn the year-old Facebook Platform into an open source project, multiple sources have told us. The immediate effect will be to allow any social network to become Facebook Platform compatible - meaning application developers can easily take their Facebook applications and have them run on those social networks, too.

......

This is a nearly inevitable response to Open Social, which is backed by Google, MySpace and Yahoo. Open Social is also an open source platform, run the the Open Social Foundation.

That sounds awesome! I never would have picked FaceBook as an open source supporter. I expected them to keep their site carefully under wraps.

Hopefully this will let us use some of the popular FaceBook applications on our sites. In particular I'd be keen to use Super Poke on my site. There's something stupidly fun about throwing a sheep at your friends and extending that to my blogging buddies would great

Hey, do you guys know if we will be able to transfer our FaceBook inbox messages, wall information etc over? Or will it just include external applications which use the FaceBook API?

No idea. It would be great if we could though. I have many friends who use my FaceBook wall to contact me and I'd love to be able to reply to all of those wall posts directly from my blog rather than having to visit FaceBook all the time. I don't see much of a benfit to FaceBook in allowing that though, it's just transferring traffic away from their site and over to my blog.

This is really a good news.. This will surely increase competition in Social networking platform and perhaps increase the Functionality and scalability of the software..

Just imagine Google Orkut members are seeing there freinds list of Face book in orkut and vice-versa .. Guys and Gals there is soo much room in this area and too much to exploree..

Yes. I really hope that the social networking companies can get organised enough to sort out a linked userbase system. This issue of not being able to transport your friends across networks is infuriating.
