Hey guys, I am interested in knowing, what new Web Development projects you are doing, curious to know, what data base you use, and if you are using Linux or Windows platform. Also, will like to know, if there are any alternatives to Adobe products, that you may be using
Only a small webdev project at the moment - working on a PHP script to automatically fetch a list of blogs related to x, that don't use nofollow in their comments. A little bit of grey-hat SEO!
I use linux (ubuntu7.10) on my desktop, absolutely love it. I have Vista on my laptop, and I hate it! It's slow and cumbersome IMO, but it does have better wireless support than Ubuntu, plus I like to use Flash, which is Windows only.
As to Adobe alternatives, The Gimp is a decent Photoshop alternative. I'm sure I read about a free linux based Illustrator alternative the other day as well, but I'm damned if I can remember its name!
The only Adobe product I use is PhotoShop. An alternative is The GIMP, but it's not really a replacement, just an alternative if you want freebie software.
I use Windows XP. Linux is appealing, but my previous experiences have been unpleasant. I can't be bothered recompiling something just to make it work, and just want my operating system to work, not require modification to use whatever software package I decide to use. Vista is a no go at this stage as there is no way to run older versions of Internet Explorer on it (yet). MacOSX is quite appealing, but my budget can't quite stretch to a Mac at the moment, if I did run it, I would need to use Parallels to run Internet Explorer for testing purposes.
For text-editing I use Araenae which I use for all HTML, CSS and PHP work. I use MySQL for databasing, although only because that is the most common one (I have no idea if it is better or worse than other ones).

When did you last try Linux? The latest distros are very user friendly - my only problems have been with wireless. Other than that, the only time I have to go near the command line is to do things above and beyond normal. The last example I can think of was setting up Apache, and most of that was still done by GUI.
I found the lack of Adobe Flash a problem too. Or has that been rectified now?
I'm not entirely sure - I have a Vista machine to run Flash on so haven't tried to get it working on the Linux box. I have read a fair bit recently about massively improved support for Adobe apps under Wine (Windows Emulator), so I'm sure the support will be there soon.
I think my honest opinion is that if I had XP available to me I'd probably go with that. When I've only got Vista though I need something quick and reliable as backup!
I have a Vista laptop I use for most of my work, from writing to development. However, i have a Linux box that roughly matches the deployment environment of my main web host, and I can use it graphically via a VNC client from my laptop for the best of both worlds.
For PHP-GTK especially, I find that there is really no alternative to using Linux. It's also great for utilities such as benchmarking tools, caching mechanisms and performance analysers such as valgrind.
I've also got an XP box that I use for testing new apps, and for Zend Studio (the slowest IDE ever; until I get 3GB of RAM in this thing I'm not letting it anywhere near my laptop).
