hi
there are many languages
some are tag based and some are script like
you have Coldfusion, PHP, ASP, .NET (I have missed some others to avoid confusion)
Lets start with Coldfusion
Coldfusion is tag based and lends itself to those who are comfortable with HTML and want a language which can be quickly implemented. Coldfusion came from the Macromedia camp (now owned by Adobe). Not everyone has taken this on and its because of this hosting and support is lacking in some areas of the net. Its gaining ground though.
PHP
PHP is almost C like in its syntax. A powerful language which has a steep learning curve. Adopted by many corporations. It is a cost effective, strategic choice as its open source. Hosting costs are quite cheap. A massive community established. Used to build allot of familiar apps including this forum
ASP
A Microsoft language which is very like VB in its syntax. A natural choice for those coding VB to a high level with little skill transfer needed. Hosting costs may be higher due to licensing of Microsoft platforms.
.NET
A Microsoft technology used by corporations who run on a Microsoft platform. Most languages can run from the framework with ASP.NET and C#.NET favoured. Lots of support and literature out there. Most Microsoft technologies have a cost and its the host that takes the hit here having to pay license fees for server platforms. This cost is passed down to the developer in higher hosting costs.
All of these are powerful enough to get most jobs done. In a professional environment the salaries differ with .NET taking the lead here
I am a PHP developer for a Corporation in the UK.
I love the job and the language.
