Default social networking site -- is using .NET a bad idea?

Hello.

I'm going to be fleshing out a social network concept in .NET (ASP, C#, MS SQL). For our intents and purposes, lets assume that it is something like Facebook, but much much simpler.

I am a novice developer with only 1.5 years experience in .NET... and none in any other languages/methodologies. So I only know that I am able to make the concept work. What i do not know, is if as this site grows and becomes the next twitter or whatever (don't laugh), is if I'm inevitably going to have to redo the entire project.

A quick look at facebook and twitter page source makes it abundantly clear that they use different, and almost certainly better, methodologies.

Does anyone have any advice for me?
Thanks for reading.
