Default Mega cheap webhosting

A colleague of mine has asked me if I would be willing to create a website for him. I'm not in the business of designing websites for other people, I've only created my own plus a few freebies for charities before.

However since it's a professional job, they're expecting full access to their control panel to setup emails etc. I'm currently on a Hostgator baby croc plan which lets me host as many sites as I want, but doesn't allow for reselling and accordingly doesn't allow seperate control panels for each website.

So ... rather than paying the extra few hundred for a reseller account which I'm unlikely to ever need again, I'm looking at purchasing a mega cheap single site hosting account. The site is likely to get less than 1000 visitors per month and will only have about three static pages on it, so I'd be putting almost no pressure on the resources of the host.

Does anyone know of any ridiculously cheap webhosts, say sub US$2/month which would suit my needs?

Minimum specs:
  • 20 MB Disk space
  • 1 MySQL database
  • php4 or 5
  • 1000 MB/month data transfer

you have to check for some resellers. Your price and requirement is very less. all plans are very high. so better go for some resellers

Free Virtual Servers isn't free like the name suggests, but has a plan at £15/month ($30, so ~$2.50/month) and meets your requirements. I've been a customer for nearly 2 years without a hiccup, and good support when needed.

Thanks for the tips!

I think I'll go with A Small Orange. I've heard good reviews of them before.

Price wise they're on the same par as FreeVirtualServers. However they have a big bonus, they offer reseller rights for only $5 more! So if I do need more seperate accounts in the future, it will only cost me an extra $5/month for the priveldge and then I can keep adding more willy nilly.

Apparently A Small Orange are quite generous with their CPU usage limits too. So despite their low specs, you can run some websites on their hosting which you can't run on much more expensive hosts.

Actually ... it looks like the reseller option on A Small Orange is only available for their US$5/month plan So at that price I'd probably be better off upgrading to the US$25/month Hostgator reseller plan as I'm already paying $10/month for my hostgator shared account - price difference would only be $5.
