Web hosting directories. Still useful?

Have you ever used a web hosting directory to find your web host?

I know that back in the day they used to be the main source for finding web hosts but with communities, friend referrals, site hosted by links etc do you still think that web hosting directories are still a viable means for users to find web hosts?

Im more curious than anything on this one.

I'd say no, purely because so many of the host directories aren't honest. The hosts they rate as best are usually just the ones who've given them the biggest wedge of cash! If I wanted to find a new host, I'd post on here and get some recommendations that way, I trust people on forums more than I trust hosting directories!

I would never use a web host directory. You can't tell if they're honest or not.

I usually hear about them via web design forums and then surf round to see what background information I can find out rather than using web hosting directories.
