I use a shared hosting plan. I've never managed to generate enough traffic to justify a whole server yet

Nope me neither - I've always been on shared hosting, but I can tell you that uses LAMP. I have a testing server setup in my house using LAMP, so I shall, err, astound you with its specs:
1.8ghz AMD Athlon Processor
512mb RAM
40GB HD
*Onboard Graphics*

We are currently on a pretty nice dedicated box but were moving to one that is 4-6 times more powerful. Stats tba.
